Celebrating his Impact and Legacy

Inspired by the legacy of Sigmund Freud and in commemoration of the 150th anniversary of his birth, the Jewish Community Center of San Francisco presents FreudFest from March to May, 2006.

FreudFest features more than forty events including lectures, films and classes, and culminating in FreudFest Day, a full day of activities on Sunday, May 21. Many of the programs offered are presented in conjunction with our community partners, including the San Francisco Psychoanalytic Institute and Society, the Psychoanalytic Institute of Northern California, the University of California San Francisco, the California Academy of Sciences, the San Francisco Jewish Film Festival, SFJAZZ, Jewish Family and Children's Services, Congregation Emanu-El and the Bureau of Jewish Education's Jewish Community Library.

The impact of Freudian and psychoanalytic ideas on modern culture and society is vast - even as their basic premises have been questioned. Freud remains one of the most influential shapers of modern Western culture. FreudFest explores Freud's legacy in contemporary psychotherapy, science, film, literature and popular culture, from the vantage point of the questions he wrestled with as a scientist, therapist, theorist and Jew. The presentations at the JCCSF's FreudFest reflect the breadth of his interests and influence.
